Refining biomass into speciality products

Lignin accounts for 30 percent of all non-fossil organic carbon on earth. And can be used as an environmentally friendly alternative to many petroleum-derived substances.

After cellulose, lignin is the second most abundant biopolymer on earth. It is a 3D complex molecule built up from phenolic alcohols, known as nature’s glue. About 100 million tons are produced worldwide as by-product of wood pulping mills and biorefinery set-ups. There are two principal categories of lignin: sulphur-containing and sulphur-free.

Protobind® products are well known and have been widely used in research and development by institutes, universities and companies and are commercially used in a variety of applications.

Protobind 1000

Sulphur free soda lignin

Protobind 1000 is a sulphur free lignin generated from soda pulping of annual fibres such as wheat straw and is available as a dry powder product with low ash and sugars impurities.

Since the product is renewable, its production cost is to some extent independent from the price volatility of oil and as shown by EMPA has a substantial potential to reduce greenhouse gas reduction.

Protobind KW

Kraft lignin produced from kraft pulping of hardwood

Protobind KW is kraft lignin produced from kraft pulping of hardwood and is available as a dry powder product with high purity. Kraft lignin is used for replacing phenol in phenol formaldehyde adhesives used for the manufacture of particular wood-based composites.

It is a non-toxic product from renewable sources. Protobind KW can be used to replace and to reduce the usage of certain petrochemicals without compromising the performance.

Plywood

Plywood is type of engineered wood consisted of two or more layers of boards glued together. Phenol formaldehyde resin is widely used for manufacturing plywood and many resin manufactures are partially utilizing lignin as a bio-based replacement for phenol in their resin.

Paper laminates

Paper-based laminates are consisted of several layers of Kraft paper impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde resins and covered with decorative and overlay paper on both sides. This type of industries is using Lignin as a partial phenol replacement in their resin.

Emulsifier & foams

Protobind KW can be used to replace and to reduce the usage of certain petrochemicals without compromising the performance.
